What was the inspiration behind the shape of the Millennium Falcon?

The original shape of the Millenium Falcon was very long and cylindrical, bearing a close resemblance to a spacecraft from the 1970s British TV-series Space: 1999, so Lucas made his model makers create something entirely different that looked like a flying hamburger and sailed like a sunfish!
